Immigration reform in the House ‘is over’. Today was effectively the last chance that the Republican-lead House had to vote on meaningful immigration reform legislation. The GOP leadership has been stalling for the last year, when the Senate passed comprehensive immigration reform legislation S744.
In a fiery speech on the House floor, Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-Ill.) said today that the Republican Party’s “chance to play a role in immigration policy is over. We’ve given you time to craft legislation and you failed. The president has no other choice but to act on existing laws to make deportation policies more humane.”
Let’s hope the president has the courage to act.
